Plot Story : Dan Brown's controversial best-selling novel about a powerful secret that's been kept under wraps for thousands of years comes to the screen in this suspense thriller from director Ron Howard. The stately silence of Paris' Louvre museum is broken when one of the gallery's leading curators is found dead on the grounds, with strange symbols carved into his body and left around the spot where he died. Hoping to learn the significance of the symbols, police bring in Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), a gifted cryptographer who is also the victim's granddaughter. Needing help, Sophie calls on Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks), a leading symbologist from the United States. As Sophie and Robert dig deeper into the case, they discover the victim's involvement in the Priory of Sion, a secret society whose members have been privy to forbidden knowledge dating back to the birth of Christianity. In their search, Sophie and Robert happen upon evidence that could lead to the final resting place of the Holy Grail, while members of the priory and an underground Catholic society known as Opus Dei give chase, determined to prevent them from sharing their greatest secrets with the world. Also starring Ian McKellen, Jean Reno, and Alfred Molina, The Da Vinci Code was shot on location in France and the United Kingdom; the Louvre allowed the producers to film at the famous museum, but scenes taking place at Westminster Abbey had to filmed elsewhere when church officials declined permission. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Review For Movie The Da Vinci Code
Completing the trail of cryptic clues simply becomes an end in and of itself -- think Sudoku: The Movie -- with little in the way of whimsy, star chemistry or excitement to enliven the dour plod.Trevor Johnston-Time Out
Even as a visual aid, The Da Vinci Code is a deep-dyed disappointment. Paris by night never looked murkier.
Joe Morgenstern-Wall Street Journal
... a first-rate thriller ...
Richard Roeper-Ebert & Roeper
If only it were allowed to be merely a cheesy romp, an Indy Jones movie with more sophisticated stereotypes and far less humor. But apparently this is no mere pop novel-turned-high-hat megaplex product.
Michael Atkinson-Village Voice
What's wrong with The Da Vinci Code can be summed up in one word: everything!
Rex Reed-New York Observer
I won't go so far as to recommend it, and I can't imagine ever wanting to see it again.
Andrew Sarris-New York Observer
The exposition is actually the best and most valuable part of the film

What seems credible on page is ludicrous in action.
Amy Nicholson-I.E. Weekly
So intent on being faithful, The DaVinci Code forgets to be entertaining.
Brandon Fibbs-BrandonFibbs.com
Any movie with a skulking albino assassin begs for campy, self-aware treatment, but Howard and scripter Akiva Goldsman serve it all up straight-faced.
Rob Gonsalves-eFilmCritic.com
Who knows whether Dan Brown was motivated by a distaste for Catholicism or merely by money? Regardless, it seems dishonest for him to foist his debunked heresies on the gullible, unsuspecting public as if they're the God's honest truth.
Kam Williams-DallasBlack.com
A great film to look at and Salvatore Totino's cinematography is pitch-perfect.
Jamie Gillies-Apollo Guide
A mystery thriller that entertains.
Doris Toumarkine-Film Journal International
Whatever your beliefs, "The Da Vinci Code" is a film to be seen and, more importantly, discussed.

Peter T. Chattaway-Christianity Today
Does what a good film adaptation should do: Illustrate the best parts of its source material and still manage to make a highly enjoyable film for the uninitiated.
Bruce Bennett-Spectrum (St. George, Utah)
The movie version is so faithful to Dan Brown's hit book it should come with a dust jacket ...
Michael Clawson-West Valley View
If you want a taut adventure story, read the book. If you want a simiplistic tale with average performances and irritating alterations to the source material, watch the movie.
Wesley Lovell-Cinema Sight
It would have taken a more imaginative approach and vision not within the reach of Howard and Goldsman to make the material come alive as a movie.
Michael Dequina-TheMovieReport.com
It still had the necessary element of Encyclopedia Brown cerebellus-ex-machina, but it was visually interesting and didn't slow down the action with book-digging%u2026they made the film well, they just took the path of least resistance, and for that I can

Some protesters believe that if you see this film, you'll go to Hell. They got it backwards. I think if you go to Hell, you'll probably see this film while you're there.
Collin Souter-eFilmCritic.com
Over the course of two and one-half hours, the film unfolds in a series of dull and unengaging episodes.
